Have you ever wished you could spend more time at the golf course perfecting the perfect swing and enjoying the camaraderie of friends? Andrew, a Southern California resident, loves the game so much that he bought a property on a golf course in San Diego County. He now resides on the edge of the green, overlooking the lush fairway and immaculate grounds.
Like most golfers, Andrew enjoys a challenge. Intent on creating his dream lifestyle, he set about renovating the entire property. The project was extensive and took more than a year to complete.
The final stage of the project was to install a stainless railing on the patio half wall. The cable railing is barely visible and allows the home’s outdoor space to blend with the surroundings but also creates a boundary necessary for personal space.
Working with AGS, Andrew requested a custom Rainier cable railing with side mount posts. He was delighted with the results and shared this step-by-step photo diary detailing how he installed the railing system in his SoCal home. AGS railing systems are custom-designed for each project; the pictures illustrate how he installed his particular railing design and are not intended to be a general how-to guide.
“We want to thank the AGS team for the beautiful cable railing. The hardest part was marking the concrete for precise hole locations. After the first three posts, we had a system down, and the remaining marking, drilling, and assembly of the railing was quick and easy”.
Installing the Railing Posts
The Scenario
The wall built between the golf course and Andrew’s home is a retaining wall, and the height varies throughout the cable run. For the handrail height to be consistent, some railing posts had to be longer than others. Extending the half-wall and aligning the posts correctly required a clever railing solution. Andrew realized a side mount railing system was perfect for the job.
Living on a golf course, Andrew wanted to preserve his view of the green and achieve a beautiful look for his home. The sprinkler system ensures the patio railing gets watered daily, so corrosion resistance is an ongoing concern. Andrew decided that marine-grade 316 stainless steel was the optimal material for his project.
Andrew secured the posts to the concrete brick half wall using epoxy and concrete anchors. He used oversized diameter washers between the posts and wall to adjust the plumb of each post.
Andrew began the railing project by requesting a Free Design Consultation. He submitted his measurements to AGS and discussed his project ideas with a railing estimator.
Preparing the Ipe Wood Handrail
Life in the Golden State is all about being outdoors, so for Andrew’s patio design, he wanted something special. He chose to install an ipe wood handrail with custom inbuilt LED lighting. He used a router to cut a dovetail groove into the top rail and then embedded the LED rope. His partner, Kathy lightly sanded the wood and applied a hardwood stain. He then attached the handrail to the railing posts.
Installing the Cable Assemblies
For easy installation, AGS attaches one end fitting and precuts each cable. Andrew threaded the cables through the posts and attached the second fitting.
Installing the Gate
What could be more appealing than stepping off the patio onto the green? An essential feature of Andrew’s custom railing design was the gate. Direct access to the golf course makes it easy to play a few holes and then invite friends back to the house for snacks and beverages.
The Finished Railing Installation
Perfect for entertaining, the patio looks fabulous and provides an inviting space for friends and family. Thank you, Andrew, for allowing AGS to tell your story and share photos of your beautiful home! We’re so happy you had such a good experience.
